Why Is My Outdoor Air Conditioning Unit Dripping Water in Winter?

May 20, 2025
News,

If you’ve noticed water dripping from your outdoor air conditioning unit during winter, especially while it’s running in heat mode, you’re not alone. At The Heat Shop, we often receive calls from homeowners across Geelong and the Surf Coast asking whether this is normal. The short answer? Yes – and here’s why.

How Air Conditioning Works in Winter

Most modern air conditioners are reverse-cycle systems. This means they don’t just cool your home in summer – they also heat it in winter. When set to heating, your system works by extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it inside. In this process, the outdoor unit becomes cold and can start to accumulate moisture from the air.

What Is Condensate?

That moisture is called condensate. As the outdoor coil cools down, it draws moisture from the surrounding air. Eventually, this water forms droplets and drips away – typically through a drain or outlet. In colder conditions, especially in the early mornings around Geelong and the Surf Coast, the coil can even freeze over. Your air conditioning system will then run a defrost cycle, melting the ice and releasing more water.

This is a completely normal function and shows your system is working efficiently.Understanding Your Air Conditioner's Winter Behaviour - The Cool Shop

When Should You Be Concerned?

While some dripping is expected, excessive pooling, constant ice build-up, or strange noises could point to blocked drains or system faults. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to get a professional to take a look.
